Coalburn Battery Energy Storage System

PROJECT SUMMARY

Glenturas Construction Ltd have substantially completed the full civil engineering package on Coalburn Battery Energy Storage System, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Coalburn BESS is a 500MW battery storage facility and described as the largest of its kind in Europe. Glenturas’ scope of works has consisted of the following key elements:

  • Site Clearence and topsoil strip.
  • Bulk earthworks.
  • Platform Construction
  • Installation of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems [SuDS] Including, construction of attenuation basins, foul water treatment systems and platform drainage.
  • Installation of over 40 kilometres of underground service ducting.
  • Installation of circa 3000no. pre-cast battery unit foundation pads.
  • Construction of RC plinths within AIS [Air Insulated Switchgear] Area.
  • Construction of 6no. RC sub-structure basement foundations for modular substation buildings.
  • Construction of RC raft foundations for PCS invertor units.
  • Finishing works consisting of invertor unit paving, final platform finishing stone, road kerbing, topsoil reinstatement and hydro-seeding.

In addition to the above-mentioned construction works, a considerable effort has been made to create, maintain and, where possible, enhance existing habitats onsite for biodiversity. This has included:

  • Improvement of habitats on areas of deep peat to maintain and enhance the peat resources on site.
  • Creation of an attenuation basin within the site, to store and manage surface water runoff from the development and also enhance biodiversity through provision of marginal vegetation and suitable habitat for aquatic fauna, including water vole.
  • Creation of species-rich neutral grassland to compensate for the loss of grassland habitats on site and retain suitable habitat conditions for ground nesting birds as well as increasing biodiversity on site.
